(1) CAUSAL OPERATORS
1. THE INCORPORATION OF CAUSAL KNOWLEDGE
Q-Engine is a platform for the development of artificial intelligence applications, in which expert knowledge is expressed in the format of causal relationships. In other words, work is created within a qualitative space with a range of five, where the dependence between variables and functions has various degrees of certainty, depending on the relationship. It is thus necessary to build a 5x5 matrix on which each column defines the possibilities of the result of the function based on the variable’s five values, with three options: null correspondence, low correspondence or high correspondence.
The expert has to build a matrix (operator) for each function. In most cases, it is possible to choose one of the operators already available on the platform in order to facilitate the work of adding causality.
2. INCORPORATION OF A WEIGHTING TO THE IMPORTANCE OF VARIABLES
The analyst may highlight the importance of the presence of some variables over others in the causal equation through the assignment of values 1, 2 or 3 (with 3 representing triple the significance for a variable defined with a value of 1) for each variable. While the operators only provide causal reasoning, weighting the variables provides knowledge on their significance in the equation.
Proposal for Q-Engine fields of application and notes from projects developed using this platform.
> Strategic territorial plans
The development of a support system for decisions when creating strategic plans for the development of emerging territories, which allows:
> E-government
The modelling of public institutions to measure and improve efficiency, with the active participation of affected social agents.
> Citizen security
The creation of an analysis methodology for the evaluation of the impact of social actions taken to improve citizen security.
> Emigration / immigration
The creation of a methodology for the analysis of migration and its economic, social, political and cultural impact for societies of both origin and destination.
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
> Management of the managerial team
Analysis and improvements in the development of the company.
> Export
The definition of a methodology, in the format of knowledge engineering, which acts as a support and guide in the process of achieving the company's export goals.
UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT
> Strategic planning of university management
Support tools for decision-making in defining planning strategies for university management.
A systematic process for the search, selection, analysis and distribution of information regarding the environment and its main players, with the aim of evaluating the efficiency of the University within the training cycles provided, and in R&D (the optimisation of social impact).
> Dynamic management of sustainability in tourism activity on a regional scale
The development of an analysis methodology based on regional sustainability indicators obtained through the integration of partial data for the areas making up the region.
> Ecotourism development
The model allows the administrations responsible for managing tourism to have a tool for the analysis and planning of the development of ecotourism based on the natural values of the territory, from the point of view of landscape and nature conservation, diversification of the local economy, control over the impact of growth on the area, etc.
> Analysis of the impact of urban planning projects on sustainability
The creation of a tool to evaluate and prevent the negative impact on sustainability of various options for urban planning:
> Treatment of mental illness
A bioinformatical methodology for optimising the treatment of mental illness, which allows the analysis of external (social environment) and internal (genetics, emotional state) factors that affect the evolution of the illness (with a known multi-gene basis, e.g. schizophrenia, epilepsy, Alzheimer's).
> Control of the evolution of genetic illnesses (human genome)
Using an analysis model based on qualitative indicators, it is possible to predict the seriousness and evolution of the illness of a particular patient, once the genetic sequence causing the illness is known. Pathologies studied: cystic fibrosis, deafness, diastrophic dysplasia, haemophilia A, long QT syndrome, Menkes syndrome, Pendred syndrome, polycystic kidney disease, sickle-cell anaemia, Wilson's disease and Zellweger syndrome.
> The impact of communication on social participation
The creation of an analysis methodology which allows an evaluation of the impact of mass media (television) on the quality of citizen participation, with the aim of improving the content presented through the media and reversing social and cultural degradation caused by the dominance of commercial interests.
Below we have added some practical examples by way of an introduction to the operation of the Q-Engine platform through the creation of ad hoc models.
1
Is it possible to give a qualitative scoring for the application of financing to various projects submitted in a call for tender with competitive criteria and issue a result with a justification of the selection?
2
Is it possible to produce a report on improvements to be included by an organisation acting with social objectives with various coordinated actions aimed at disadvantaged groups using public resources?
3
Is it possible to evaluate the risks regarding social inclusion in a municipality where this risk needs to be measured periodically with a definition of critical points, identifying those which are managed well and those which require further action?
